What are the most common illnesses in backyard chicken flocks

Respiratory illnesses are extremely common in chickens, both backyard and large poultry operations.

It is extremely important to monitor your flock for signs of respiratory disease such as:

  1. Ocular discharge
  2. Nasal discharge
  3. Oral masses or ulcerations
  4. Snicking (sneezing), coughing
  5. Gaping
  6. Rapid breathing

When do I need health certificates for travel?

Interstate movement of livestock requires a recent health certificate before movement. Each state has separate requirements for movements and those can be found at Interstate Livestock Movement.

What is NPIP?

NPIP stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan. Information on becoming an NPIP certified flock can be found here.

The objective of the NPIP is to provide a cooperative federal-state program through which to effectively apply new technology to the improvement of poultry and poultry products by establishing standards for the evaluation (testing) of poultry breeding stock, baby chicks, poults, and hatching eggs with respect to freedom from certain diseases. 

Do backyard birds get parasites?

Yes! Poultry do have parasites to look out for both internally and externally!

It is important to keep a close eye on the overall health of your birds! If you are noticing feather loss, excessive picking, visible lice or mites, diarrhea, or weight loss it may be time to evaluate for parasites!
